“I think the saddest people always try their hardest to make people happy because they know what it’s like to feel absolutely worthless and they don’t want anyone else to feel like that.”

R and I recently had a conversation about Robin Williams and this time he said, “Well, he killed himself because he had (some chronic condition) and didn’t want to be a burden to his family.” Oh, well, that makes it much better. Because outside a chronic illness, suicide is implausible.
That mentality irks me to no end.

I think when anyone reaches a point of hopelessness, suicide seems like a viable means to an end. That’s what I felt. I wasn’t thinking of the impact on others because I was so far gone. When you reach hopelessness, you only think about the escape hatch, and the immediate ending of the loss of hope. You don’t care about ANYTHING. ELSE. X

I’ve seen this quote before, and I think it’s one of my favorites. So true! It’s very much a double-edged sword though. The more we try to make others happy, the more we are sometimes going down ourselves without anyone noticing.

So true, Amy. We must take care of ourselves first. This note struck home with me because I am a joker in the sense of this quote. I am a work in progress.

I’ve known my friend R for sixteen years. He’s seen me at my rock bottom depression (and of course, discarded me). He loved Robin Williams and still can’t grasp why “Someone so funny and talented with so much to live for would kill themselves.”

Hard to deal with people who have so little comprehension of mental illness.
